Outdated fuse boards don't meet current regulations and put your home at risk. Our qualified engineers upgrade consumer units with full RCD and RCBO protection, completing most jobs in a single day.

What We Do
Outdated fuse boards are a liability. If your consumer unit still has rewireable fuses, lacks RCD protection, or keeps tripping, it's time for an upgrade to a modern unit with full circuit protection.
Modern consumer units are designed to meet current building regulations and protect your installation. We install units fitted with RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and RCBOs (Residual Current Breakers with Over-current protection), providing the best protection against electric shock and fire risk.
Our upgrades include a complete test and inspection certificate confirming the work meets BS 7671 standards. We also add new circuits for EV chargers, electric showers, extended kitchens, garden supplies, or any other requirement, all wired safely back to the new consumer unit.
Most domestic consumer unit replacements are completed within 4–8 hours on a single day. We work across East and West Sussex and cover landlord properties, commercial premises, and residential homes.

How It Works
From survey and quote to installation and testing, here is exactly what to expect when you choose us for your consumer unit upgrade.
We attend to survey your existing installation, check your circuits, and provide a fixed-price quote for the upgrade before any work begins.
Your existing supply is safely isolated and the old consumer unit removed. We check all circuits for pre-existing faults before installation.
The new consumer unit is installed, all circuits connected and labelled, and supplementary bonding checked and upgraded where required.
Every circuit is fully tested to BS 7671, and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or EICR is issued before we leave.

Complete Guide
Rewireable fuse boards and early MCB units were built to outdated standards. They lack the RCD protection required by BS 7671 to detect earth faults, meaning a damaged cable or faulty appliance can go undetected long enough to cause a fire or a fatal electric shock. A modern consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection will disconnect the circuit within 40 milliseconds of detecting a fault. We install metal consumer units as standard — metal enclosures are fire-rated and contain any internal fault, unlike plastic units which can melt and spread fire.
BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) require all new and significantly altered installations to incorporate RCD protection. The 18th Edition Amendment 2 (2022) now mandates Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) on most new domestic consumer unit installations — protection against voltage spikes that can destroy electronics and appliances. If you are selling a property, adding a new circuit, or have received a poor EICR, you will likely be required to upgrade. Landlords in particular face legal obligations under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020.
EV chargers, electric showers, induction hobs, home offices, and outbuildings all demand dedicated circuits. Older consumer units rarely have the spare ways or adequate protection to accommodate them safely. An upgrade gives you the capacity to add circuits now and in the future without compromising the integrity of the installation.
Split Load
•£500–£800
The most common and cost-effective upgrade. Circuits are split into two groups, each protected by a single RCD. If one RCD trips, half your circuits go off — but the other half stay live. Suitable for most straightforward domestic replacements.
RCBO Full Protection
•£600–£900
Every circuit has its own individual RCBO (a combined MCB and RCD in one device). If any single circuit trips, only that circuit is affected — the rest of your home stays powered. The highest standard of domestic protection available.
