What We Do

Consumer Unit Upgrade Specialists

Outdated fuse boards are a liability. If your consumer unit still has rewireable fuses, lacks RCD protection, or keeps tripping, it's time for an upgrade to a modern unit with full circuit protection.

Modern consumer units are designed to meet current building regulations and protect your installation. We install units fitted with RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and RCBOs (Residual Current Breakers with Over-current protection), providing the best protection against electric shock and fire risk.

Our upgrades include a complete test and inspection certificate confirming the work meets BS 7671 standards. We also add new circuits for EV chargers, electric showers, extended kitchens, garden supplies, or any other requirement, all wired safely back to the new consumer unit.

Most domestic consumer unit replacements are completed within 4–8 hours on a single day. We work across East and West Sussex and cover landlord properties, commercial premises, and residential homes.

01

Survey & Quote

We attend to survey your existing installation, check your circuits, and provide a fixed-price quote for the upgrade before any work begins.

02

Safe Isolation

Your existing supply is safely isolated and the old consumer unit removed. We check all circuits for pre-existing faults before installation.

03

Install & Connect

The new consumer unit is installed, all circuits connected and labelled, and supplementary bonding checked and upgraded where required.

04

Test & Certificate

Every circuit is fully tested to BS 7671, and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or EICR is issued before we leave.

Complete Guide

Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?

Safety

Old Boards Are a Fire Risk

Rewireable fuse boards and early MCB units were built to outdated standards. They lack the RCD protection required by BS 7671 to detect earth faults, meaning a damaged cable or faulty appliance can go undetected long enough to cause a fire or a fatal electric shock. A modern consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection will disconnect the circuit within 40 milliseconds of detecting a fault. We install metal consumer units as standard — metal enclosures are fire-rated and contain any internal fault, unlike plastic units which can melt and spread fire.

Compliance

Required by Current Regulations

BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) require all new and significantly altered installations to incorporate RCD protection. The 18th Edition Amendment 2 (2022) now mandates Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) on most new domestic consumer unit installations — protection against voltage spikes that can destroy electronics and appliances. If you are selling a property, adding a new circuit, or have received a poor EICR, you will likely be required to upgrade. Landlords in particular face legal obligations under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020.

Capacity

Modern Homes Need More Circuits

EV chargers, electric showers, induction hobs, home offices, and outbuildings all demand dedicated circuits. Older consumer units rarely have the spare ways or adequate protection to accommodate them safely. An upgrade gives you the capacity to add circuits now and in the future without compromising the integrity of the installation.

Signs You Need a Consumer Unit Upgrade

Your board still uses rewireable wire fuses
There is no RCD protection on any circuit
Breakers trip frequently or fail to reset
You have received a C1 or C2 code on an EICR
You are installing an EV charger or new circuit
The board smells of burning or shows scorch marks
You are selling or letting the property
Your board is original to a 1960s, 70s, or 80s build
Circuits share protection they should not share
Your consumer unit has no surge protection (SPD)
Your consumer unit is plastic, not metal/fire-rated

Types of Consumer Unit

Split Load

£500–£800

The most common and cost-effective upgrade. Circuits are split into two groups, each protected by a single RCD. If one RCD trips, half your circuits go off — but the other half stay live. Suitable for most straightforward domestic replacements.

  • Most affordable option
  • Suitable for standard domestic properties
  • Faster to install than full RCBO boards
  • Complies with current BS 7671 regulations

RCBO Full Protection

£600–£900

Every circuit has its own individual RCBO (a combined MCB and RCD in one device). If any single circuit trips, only that circuit is affected — the rest of your home stays powered. The highest standard of domestic protection available.

  • Individual circuit protection — one fault, one circuit off
  • No nuisance tripping affecting unrelated circuits
  • Recommended for larger properties and new builds
  • Ideal where any loss of power is disruptive (medical equipment, freezers)

Protection Included

Full BS 7671 Coverage

  • RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit
  • Metal (fire-rated) enclosure as standard
  • Surge Protection Device (SPD) fitted to board
  • Earth fault protection — disconnects within 40ms
  • Overcurrent protection on every final circuit
  • Polarity, insulation, and continuity verified on all circuits

How Long It Takes

4–8 Hours

  • Most domestic replacements completed in a single day
  • Power is off only while the new unit is being connected
  • Larger installations or commercial boards may take longer
  • We always aim to restore full power before we leave

Certification

BS 7671 Compliant

  • Every upgrade includes a signed test and inspection certificate
  • All circuits tested for continuity, insulation, and polarity
  • Loop impedance and RCD operating times verified and recorded
  • Certificate issued to you and registered with Part P
